HM exempts immigration rule for convenience of frequent travellers

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to exempt the requirement of immigration stamps for Bruneian passport holders entering and exiting through immigration posts effective from tomorrow.

The announcement was made by Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Awang Adanan Begawan Mudim Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Awang Mohd Yusof, Minister of Home Affairs, at the second Meeting and Dialogue Sessions between all of the penghulu, village chiefs and heads of longhouses in Brunei Darussalam at the Belalong community centre.

The type of travel documents included in the announcement were Brunei Darussalam passport, diplomatic passport and normal travel documents (GCI).

"The requirements of immigration stamps on Brunei passport, entering and exiting through the immigration post in the country has been one of the main concerns for Bruneians travelling to Sarawak or Sabah especially for Temburong citizens who travel frequently to BSB," said Pehin Dato Adanan.

The decision is aimed at giving relief to Bruneians who frequently travel between borders and due chops their passport pages get filled, forcing them to renew passports ahead of the expiry date.

"The removal of passport stamps will help extend the usage of the passport especially for those who make frequent journeys abroad and in this way will help reduce the cost of passports," said Pehin Dato Adanan.

The Immigration and National Registration Department is utilising the Border Control System application, following the current trends of neighbouring countries in the advancement of Information Communications and Technology (ICT).

Bruneian passport holders will still need to present their passports and travel documents before the immigration officer to verify that the person is the rightful holder of the passport.

"This is to enable immigration officers to examine the passport as a per normal procedure under immigration laws," said Pehin Dato Adanan.

The process involves presenting the documents to immigration officers at authorised security posts where the passport will be scanned.

All the information from the passport will then be recorded into the Border Control System database of the Immigration and National Registration Department to verify the holder of the passport and travel documents. The Brunei Times
